EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior scored a brilliant equalizer to rescue a 1-1 draw for five-time world champions Brazil against a disciplined Morocco side on Saturday, in the 2026 FIFA World Cup’s first heavyweight clash.
Playing before a sold-out crowd at New York/New Jersey Stadium, Morocco capitalized on early Brazilian sluggishness. In the 21st minute, midfielder Ismael Saibari ran onto a precise through-ball from Brahim Díaz and clinically chipped an advancing Alisson Becker to give the Atlas Lions the lead.
Brazil struck back in the 32nd minute through sheer individual talent. Vinícius Júnior cut inside from the left flank and curled a spectacular right-footed shot into the far top corner past Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.
Despite late pressure from Brazil, Morocco’s defense held firm to split the points, mirroring their elite form from their historic 2022 semifinal run. The result leaves Group C entirely level following a parallel 1-1 draw between Qatar and Switzerland.
“The team was a bit nervous; we lost possession too often,” Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti said post-match. “The first half wasn’t good… but you don’t win a World Cup based on your first match.”
Moroccan head coach Mohamed Ouahbi remained ambitious: “One point is good enough, but we hoped for more. I want to go beyond the semifinals this time.”
