A powerful wave of global solidarity has mobilized across the world following recent public demonstrations in the Jabrail neighborhood of Herat, Afghanistan. Afghans and international civil activists have staged coordinated rallies in at least 14 major global cities to protest the Taliban’s escalating restrictions and recent arbitrary arrests of women and girls.
The international rallies were sparked by localized protests in Herat, where residents took to the streets against the Taliban’s sweeping systemic clampdowns on female autonomy and education. In a unified response, diaspora communities and human rights defenders worldwide gathered to demand an immediate end to the Taliban’s institutional repression.
Marching under the core, rallying slogan of “Education, Work and Freedom,” demonstrators across the 14 cities called on the international community to defend the fundamental rights of Afghan women and hold the de facto authorities in Kabul accountable for ongoing human rights violations.
